Wine equalisation tax (WET)

Wine equalisation tax is a tax on the wholesale value of wine sold in Australia, applying to wine producers, wholesalers and importers rather than to the customer at the bar or bottle shop. It is reported and paid on the business activity statement for registered businesses. A WET rebate may reduce the amount payable for eligible wine producers, subject to a cap, and a refund can be available for wine exported. The tax is separate from GST, so a wine business can have both on the same statement. Getting the amount right depends on tracking which sales are wholesale and which are retail.
