GST, BAS and activity statements

Business activity statement (BAS)

A business activity statement, or BAS, is the form a business uses to report and pay several tax obligations to the ATO in one place. Depending on what the business is registered for, it can cover GST, PAY as you go (PAYG) withholding, PAYG instalments, fringe benefits tax instalments, luxury car tax, wine equalisation tax and fuel tax credits. It is lodged for a reporting period, usually each quarter or each month, and the amounts reported are normally worked out from the business's bookkeeping records. Registered tax agents and BAS agents commonly lodge activity statements for their clients through the ATO's agent channels. Which labels a business must complete depends on its registrations and reporting cycle.
