GST, BAS and activity statements
Goods and services tax (GST)
GST is a broad-based tax on most goods, services and other things sold or consumed in Australia. A business that is registered for GST includes GST in the price of its taxable sales, reports that GST to the ATO, and can usually claim back the GST included in the price of what it buys for the business. Some supplies are GST-free, such as many basic foods and some health and education services, and others are input taxed, such as most residential rent. The rules are set out in A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999. Registered businesses report and pay GST on their business activity statements.
