Practice, agents and regulation
TPB public register
The public register is the Tax Practitioners Board's searchable list of registered tax agents and BAS agents, together with certain unregistered entities and individuals. Anyone can search it by name or registration number to confirm that a practitioner is currently registered, and to see details such as the type of registration and any conditions or sanctions the Board has recorded. ASIC's Financial Advisers Register is separate: it lists individuals authorised to provide personal advice to retail clients on relevant financial products. Clients use it before engaging an adviser, and practices use it to check people they refer work to. An unregistered person cannot lawfully charge a fee for tax agent or BAS services, so a missing entry is a reason to ask questions before any work or information changes hands.
