Registered tax agent
A registered tax agent is a person or firm registered with the Tax Practitioners Board to provide tax agent services for a fee, such as preparing and lodging income tax returns and giving advice about tax. The Tax Agent Services Act 2009 makes it an offence to charge a fee for these services without being registered. To register, a practitioner must meet requirements on qualifications, experience, being a fit and proper person and holding professional indemnity insurance, and must then meet ongoing obligations including continuing professional education. Registered agents act for clients through the ATO's online services once the client has linked them. Clients can look an agent up on the public register.
