Tax file number (TFN)
A tax file number, or TFN, is a unique number the ATO issues to an individual or organisation to identify them in the tax and super systems. It is personal to the holder and should be given only to people who are entitled to ask for it, such as an employer, a bank or super fund, or the holder's registered tax agent. Quoting a TFN is generally not compulsory, but if a payer does not receive one, tax may be withheld at a higher rate. A practice that holds client TFNs must protect them as sensitive personal information, restrict who can see them, and not send them in plain email.
