GST, BAS and activity statements

Fixing a BAS mistake (revising a BAS)

Fixing a BAS mistake means correcting an amount reported on a lodged activity statement. Depending on the type and size of the error, the ATO lets a business correct it by adjusting a later statement or by revising the original one. Either way, the correction should be made as soon as the error is found, and the business should keep a record of what was wrong and what changed. Where the mistake led to too little tax being reported, interest or a penalty may apply, which the ATO says it may reduce when the business comes forward on its own. The ATO page sets out which method applies to which kind of mistake.
