Fuel tax credits

Fuel tax credits give a business a credit for the fuel tax included in the price of fuel it uses in certain business activities, such as machinery, heavy vehicles and equipment. They are claimed on the business activity statement, and the business must be registered for GST and keep records of the fuel acquired and how it was used. The credit rate depends on the type of fuel and the activity, and the ATO publishes the current rates. Fuel used in light vehicles on public roads, or for private purposes, does not qualify. A practice that lodges the BAS needs the fuel quantities, not only the dollar amounts, to claim correctly.
