SMSF annual return
The SMSF annual return is the yearly return in which the trustees report the fund's income, expenses, assets and member information to the ATO, and which doubles as the fund's income tax return. It is lodged after the fund's audit is finished and its financial statements are complete, and the ATO sets the due date, with different dates depending on whether a registered agent lodges it under the lodgment program. The ATO collects the fund's regulatory information with the return and pays attention to late lodgers. A practice that acts for an SMSF tracks audit status, member balances and contribution records before preparing the return.
