Research and development tax incentive (R&D)

The research and development tax incentive is a government programme that gives eligible companies a tax offset for spending on eligible R&D activities. It is administered jointly by AusIndustry, which registers the activities, and the ATO, which deals with the tax claim. A company registers its R&D activities with the programme within the time allowed, then claims the offset in its income tax return, with an R&D schedule. The activities must meet the definition of core R&D activities, and the expenditure must be eligible and documented. Because the claim depends on records of what was done and spent, a practice involved should keep contemporaneous evidence from the start.
