Practice, agents and regulation
Australian Business Register (ABR)
The Australian Business Register is the database that holds the registration details of Australian businesses, including each ABN, the entity's name, its entity type and its GST registration status. The ATO is the registrar and the details are published on the public ABN Lookup. Tax professionals can see a client's ABN details through the ATO's online services for agents. Practices use the register to confirm a business's name, entity type and registration dates, which matters when checking a supplier or a client before lodging. The register is only as current as the information the business has given, so changes such as a new trading name need to be reported.
