Tracking categories (Segments)

Create tracking categories, such as location, department, job or cost centre, tag transactions and split the P&L and Balance Sheet into a column per option.

The problem it solves

Clients want to see how each location, department or job is performing, without a second set of books.

How it works

  1. Create a tracking category and its options.
  2. Tag transactions with an option in the reconciliation grid.
  3. Turn on "Split by segment" on the P&L, or tick the by-segment sections in the financial statements.

What your practice gets

  • A column per location, department, job or cost centre.
  • Runs alongside the chart of accounts, not a second ledger.
  • Untagged rows appear in an (Unassigned) column, never dropped.

Questions accountants ask

Do the columns add up to the total?

Segment columns add across to the Total, and the Total is computed independently from the full transaction set, not by summing the columns. A transaction counted into the wrong number of columns shows up as a line that does not tie, rather than being hidden by the arithmetic.

Can journal entries be tagged?

No. Journal entries land in the (Unassigned) column and the Total.

Is this statutory segment reporting?

No. Inter-segment dealings are not eliminated and a segment column is not a standalone balance sheet. It is a management view by tracking category.
